Self Assessment

   In US history, I have learned to find and read historical documents with great understanding of the material.  I have learned that history is not only the restatement of events that have happened in the past, but understanding why those events occurred.  With this concept in mind, I have learned how to relate everything that we have learned so far, to the new material that we are learning at this moment.  In the future, I hope to develop these skills much farther to be able to make strong connections between events in history much faster.  With skills such as paraphrasing, quoting, and summarizing, I will be will now be able to articulate my finding much clearer, making me more successful in this class.

History of the American Flag

        The origin of the American flag is a mystery, but the most widely accepted theory is the flag was designed by New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkins, then sewn by the Betsy Ross in 1777.  The flag mainly changed for the addition of a new state to the nation, so they would add a star.  According to  USHistory.com  time line of the American flag, in 1779, the stars of the flag became aligned in rows.  Each star on the flag represents a state, while the stripes represent the original thirteen colonies.  According to  PBS 's article about the American flag, the blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.  Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, and white represents purity and innocence.  The flag has become a symbol of freedom and democracy all around the globe, because it is the representation of the free world.  The names of the American flag are descriptions of the appearance of the flag, but also de...

Political Cartoons

This cartoon is showing President Roosevelt shoveling away the protesters against the Panama Canal.  This shows that Roosevelt didn’t care that people did not want to be in the Panama Canal, and making him seem like a tyrannical figure.  This leads me to believe that the artist was unhappy with Roosevelt’s actions. This cartoon is trying to show the gluttony of America towards obtaining new land, and trying to convey that the situation has become excessive.  It is also showing how other countries want be on friendly terms so they do not become next, especially with the confident face on Uncle Sam. The cartoon is showing that America is being very forceful with the territories.  They even try to draw similarities with England’s style of colonization with the blackboard in the back of the classroom. This is to say that we have become the thing we once fought against.
